Many, probably still think that the development of a “Global Democratic Republic” (GDR) is utopian. For us, it is the most obvious need within the global crises which is currently unfolding – global warming, climate disruption, and the loss of biodiversity mostly due to “greenhouse gas” (GHG) emissions from burning fossil fuels (coal, oil, gas) and the industrial production of meat.
Science has clearly shown how global warming is negatively impacting the earth’s ecosystem. Research by renowned scientists show that:
- There are at least 2-3 billion lives endangered by global warming.
- Every one of us will be more or less negatively affected by global warming.
The root cause for this in our view is the lack of global democracy. Economic globalisation over the last 80 years enabled a historic growth in global population, wealth, and prosperity for many.
But this comes with dangerous “externalities”. Adam Smith, “father” of this economic globalisation, already understood this in the 18th century, when he published his book “The Theory of Moral Sentiments” (1761).
Applied to the current situation in this 21st century, this implies, in our view the development of global democracy. However, there is absolutely no meaningful democratic decision making at the global level.
Mitigating global warming failed and we are witnessing the rapid consequences of this 100% political failure. The climate system of our mother planet Earth is inert, and with a delay of ca. 30 years, we will experience this greatest political failure in human history; much greater than the 2nd World War. It is also important to note that political (global) decision making performs very poorly within this inert system.
We want to significantly change this. We want the “affected people” to become “decision makers” through the development of a global democracy – one person, one vote, not matter what nationality. In our view, the best way to start this is through a first official global vote on ‘climate action’ with potentially 5.5 billion people easily participating (they are connected to the World Wide Web).
Working on this mission deemed by most as utopian – building and setting the foundations for a global democracy – there are dark days. The path is mostly filled with loneliness, and sometimes even laughter and hostility.
But today is a wonderful moment for us towards such a first official global referendum on ‘climate action” and with this, a first significant step towards the development of a “Global Democratic Republic” (GDR)
The IDGR has become an official member of the renowned Global Democracy Coalition – a global alliance of democracy organisations advancing and protecting democratic governance worldwide.
We are most honoured to have our work recognised by the Global Democracy Coalition. We view this membership as an imperative step toward advancing global democracy. This partnership reflects our commitment to contributing to the development of a healthy and sustainable society. In an era shaped by transnational challenges, strengthening institutional cooperation, accountability and knowledge exchange is essential for sustainable development.
As part of this collaboration, we look forward to working closely with the Global Democracy Coalition and the wider international community to promote inclusive governance and meaningful democratic participation across global affairs.
Our responsibility to build a healthy and sustainable society has never been more urgent. Through this partnership, we reaffirm our dedication to advancing a more equitable, stable, and sustainable future for present and future generations. We will continue to push for a better society through collective action grounded in the principles of global democracy.
