The highly respected “International Energy Agency” (IEA) held its most important “Ministerial Meeting”, which takes place every two years, in Paris on February 18 and 19, gathering energy ministers, leaders and decision makers from the most important energy corporations. The meeting was held with the aim of “taking stock of the latest developments in energy markets and policies, and the implications for energy security, affordability and sustainability”, and to discuss key global energy challenges and opportunities (cf. “2026 IEA Ministerial Meeting“).
The meeting ended without a communiqué. This indicates that there is no common understanding on the future of the global energy challenges and opportunities.
“A large majority of Ministers stressed the importance of the energy transition to combat climate change and highlighted the global transition to net zero emissions in line with COP28 outcomes.”
2026 IEA Ministerial Chair’s Summary
While respecting and acknowledging the important work of the IEA, significant pressure from the “Trump administration” has constrained the ambitions of the agency to transform the global energy system in order to control global warming and preserve a stable and predictable global climate system for our mother planet Earth.
Since it is widely common sense among leading climate scientists that we will reach the “1.5°C climate tipping point” by 2029, we are heading towards an unstable and less predictable climate ecosystem, which will impact (not thousands, not millions, but) billions of livelihoods and lives. Against this backdrop, the “2026 IEA Ministerial Meeting” risks being a part of what will be remembered as the greatest political failure ever in human history.
Mitigating “greenhouse gas” (GHG) emissions, global warming, climate change, and the loss of biodiversity is too big to fail!
It is time for a (radically) new way and this way is called “global democracy”. It is time for a first official direct democratic vote on ‘climate action’ with potentially 5.5 billion people easily participating (since they are connected to the WWW).
Let us, the actually affected become decision makers within geo-politics, no matter what nationality.
