We have a very clear focus on how to develop our dream of a “Global Democratic Republic” – based on all our experience with start-up, organisation development, change management, and transformation projects. In our view, the best way to develop and to achieve our dream is by evolving it from the existing “United Nations” (UN) organisations.
Based on this clear approach and insight, we are most appreciated to be now official partner of the “Article 109 Coalition“, the leading global initiative advocating for a renewed “UN Charter“.
“It’s time to renew the United Nations. It’s time to renew the United Nations Charter.”
Article 109 Coalition (article109.org)
Our understanding of the current situation with the UN organisations could not be more aligned with the one from the “Article 109 Coalition” – an international coalition “bringing together campaigners, former diplomats, experts, and organisations from around the world”. The “Article 109 Coalition” is mobilising to renew the “UN Charter” based on “Article 109” from the “UN Charter”.
We wholeheartedly agree: the UN is certainly one – or even the most wonderful invention of humanity ever so far in the history of mankind. Nevertheless, its foundation and “UN Charter” goes back more than 80 years now, and the UN back there after “World War II” in 1945 was designed around very different political, economical, and ecological conditions. While many aspects of the UN remain groundbreaking and “state-of-the-art” – like the “Universal Declaration of Human Rights” (UNDHR), the overall organisation shows strong demand for renewal and strengthening.
In our view – and in the view of the “Article 109 Coalition” – this renewal is essential if the UN is to become powerful enough to address and respond to today’s global developments appropriately.
Following the profound impact of the “economic globalisation” over the past decades, these developments now operate on a truly global scale. This demands nothing less than a shift towards “political globalisation” to match the challenges of our time.
“The United Nations was built for a different era – and is struggling with today’s challenges, from environmental catastrophe and conflict to inequalities and runaway technologies.”
Article 109 Coalition (article109.org)
(1) The so-called “Trump administration“, representing one of the main UN’s founding nations – the “United States of America” (USA) – is currently pursuing its own approach to the “renewal” of the UN organisations.
Where the “Article 109 Coalition” advocates for strengthening the UN, the “Trump administration” interprets “renewal” as a significant weakening of the organisation – supposedly to strengthen USA’s own particular national interests. They execute the disruption and dismantling of the UN organisations by:
- withdrawing from key UN bodies (e.g., the “World Health Organisation” – WHO, the “Paris Agreement on Climate Change“),
- slashing financial contributions to the UN, and
- redirecting funds away from UN organisations and allocating their money towards national USA based organisations and businesses.
(2) The UN – facing significant pressure, e.g., from these “Tump administration” UN destruction initiatives – responded with the “UN80 initiative“.
The “UN80 initiative” can be summarised as an organisational change project – one that introduces adjustments without altering the UN’s fundamental structures, such as the “UN Charter”. While it signals a demand for a “renewed” UN, it reflects only a limited willingness to structural reform.
The “UN80 initiative” is clearly set up within the context of “cost efficiency” improvements, without questioning the root causes of the demand for renewal – such as the e.g., the missing democratic legitimisation of the UN and its sub-organisations, and the overall global democratic vacuum on supranational and geo-political level.
(3) We envision a clear political strengthening of the “United Nations”, rooted in a significant democratisation of the UN’s decision-making processes (e.g., via global direct democracy or/and an elected global parliament), and a strongly institutionalised global republic pattern, built on a clear “separation of powers” (cf. “checks and balances”). We call this a “Global Democratic Republic“.
While “Article 109” primarily calls for a renewed “UN Charter” under “Article 109” (cf. “What is Article 109 and how would a General Conference work?“) ), our ambitions extend even further.
We are committed not only to strengthening the UN but to developing a “Global Democratic Republic” directly from its existing structures. This includes advocating for the first-ever official direct democratic vote (global referendum) on ‘climate action’.
The “Article 109 Coalition” represents a collaboration that is urgently needed, powerfully transformative, and incredibly exciting to pioneer.
“World leaders are calling for the international system to adapt. Countries from Africa, Asia, Europe, and Latin America have joined Nobel Laureates, academics, and civil society in calling for the UN Charter to be renewed.”
