1.5°C expected in 4.5 years – we need a first global referendum on climate actions now

Karl Baumann, March 24, 2025March 24, 2025

Latest data from “The Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S)” (https://www.copernicus.eu) and its “C3S Global temperature trend monitor” shows global warming reached 1.38°C in February 2025.

Reaching 1.5°C of global warming above pre-industrial levels – the limit agreed under the “Paris Agreement” – is expected by September 2029, within ca. 4.5 years.

We understand, 1.5°C is a “physical limit”. Above 1.5°C, global warming, climate change, and the loss of biodiversity is “likely out of human control” since tipping points are reached and self-reinforcing cycles will be activated.

We see very strong and immediate demand for “radical truth” from UN, UNDP, UNFCCC & IPCC about the actual situation concerning the 1.5°C goal and the “Paris Agreement”. Based on the latest data and based on our understanding of the inert climate system – we see a 30 years delay between “greenhouse gas” (GHG) emissions and actual temperature rise, the current global warming (geo)politics failed to reach the 1.5°C goal from the “Paris Agreement”. Furthermore, annual GHG emissions are still rising (see graph from “Our World in Data“, https://ourworldindata.org/grapher/total-ghg-emissions).

Thus, in our view we have to immediately and significantly rethink global warming (geo)politics and actions. Among others, now it is time to actually ask the people around the globe what they want and how they want to continue – most important with (1) the facing out of fossil fuels (coal, gas, oil) and (2) the reduction of global meat production.

We ask for strong leadership and direct global democracy, we pledge for an immediate first global referendum on climate actions.
